However, instances of password resets are also common.
Some of the reasons for resetting your passwords and tips to reset passwords in your Lenovo ThinkPad X301 are mentioned below:

Reasons for password reset
There are different reasons because of which the password set by you in your laptop in order to protect its content should be reset. Instances of formatting your system or restoring it which rolls back your system to its factory settings would reset all the passwords set by you. Sometimes, you need to reset the password due to issues of hacking in order to safeguard your system. Sudden system crash or failure could also contribute to password reset.
BIOS Password Reset Service
Lenovo provides the BIOS Password Reset Service for the 'power on password' and the 'hard drive password'. This tool helps in resetting or removing your password. In order to use this service, your current BIOS settings should be set to 'Enabled, in progress'. To run this service, you are required to go to 'Program Files' and then select 'Lenovo'. Then, select the 'Client Security Solution' and double-click on 'HwPwReset.exe'. This creates a Secure Environment in your hard drive. On booting into the Secure Environment, you are also required to establish three security questions and answers.
There is no way to reset your supervisor password if you have forgotten it. This password is required to gain access to the ThinkPad BIOS Setup utility. In order to gain access, you would need to service the system to have the system board and hard drive replaced. As there are the master- and user-hard drive passwords for the system administrator and user respectively, losing the master password would require your hard drive to be replaced. However, if you have lost the user password, the master password could be used to gain access to the hard drive. The Power-on password could be reset by simply going to the ThinkPad BIOS Setup utility and resetting it there.
